The Power of the Small: My Lockdown Journey with "A Moment for Me"

During the uncertainty of lockdown, my world, like many others, felt turned upside down. The lines between work and home blurred, and the constant news cycle created a persistent feeling of anxiety. In an effort to find a sense of stability, I started doing something new: I went live on social media for 30 minutes nearly every day.

These sessions weren't about a grand self-care plan; they were simply called "A Moment for Me." Each session was a dedicated time to pause, breathe, and reconnect. We would practice a short meditation, explore a journal prompt, or simply share self-care tips. The feedback was incredible, and I quickly realised that these small, consistent acts were more powerful than any big, one-off gesture.

It’s About Consistency, Not Intensity

The biggest lesson I learned from "A Moment for Me" is that self-care doesn’t have to be a luxurious, week-long retreat. True resilience is built in the daily, five-minute practices. A quick meditation, a few deep breaths, or a moment of quiet reflection might seem insignificant, but when you do it every day, it builds a foundation of peace that can withstand the chaos.

The Power of the Pause

Our lives are a relentless series of tasks and transitions. These small moments are powerful because they act as a pause button. Just 30 minutes was enough time to reset my nervous system, clear my head, and remind myself that I was in control of my inner world, even if the outer world felt completely out of control. These pauses were the glue that held my days together.

Intentionality Over Time

The "Moment for Me" sessions taught me that the length of a self-care practice is far less important than the intention behind it. A rushed, hour-long activity where your mind is still racing is less effective than a five-minute block where you are fully present. It's about consciously choosing to show up for yourself, even for a brief moment.

You don't have to go live on social media to give yourself a "Moment for Me." It can be:

  • A minute of deep breathing while you wait for your coffee to brew.

  • Listening to one full song you love before starting your workday.

  • Writing one sentence in a journal about something you're grateful for.

These small moments are where you build resilience, reclaim your peace, and remind yourself that your well-being is non-negotiable. Don't wait for a "perfect" time for self-care. Just give yourself a moment. You've earned it.
